Customs vary between communities and religious sites. A polite question to your host or a site attendant is often the best way to understand what is appropriate.
- A greeting of Namaste, with palms together, is a familiar way to greet people respectfully.
- Check whether shoes must be removed before entering a home or place of worship. Dress respectfully for the setting.
- Read entrance signs and follow site rules. Some sacred areas restrict entry, photography or leather items.
- Ask before photographing a person, ceremony or interior. Accept a refusal without pressing for an exception.
- At Buddhist stupas, clockwise circulation is customary. Follow local guidance when unsure.
- When sharing a meal, avoid touching communal food with something that has touched your mouth.
These are general visitor pointers, not rules shared identically by every Nepali community.
